So I go down to Homer this week to put a heater in my boat (didn't take my laptop... anyone miss me? didn't think so...) I needed to run out to the boat harbor area for some parts, and looky what I found. Seems I forgot about the lady that used to feed the Bald Eagles (but does not any more) and all the eagles that still hang around. HUNDREDS of them! These are just a couple of the photos I took. Pretty funny actually... there were scores of people from all over the world just for this event (they only congregate like this around this time of year)... news cameras, paper photographers, cameras of all shapes and sizes. HUGE lenses, multiple thousands of dollar cameras, tripods that would support a truck and then there was me... with my $300 little digital point and shoot!

I love this state... and y'all wonder why we live up here! :laugh:
 
I remember seeing some of the nature pictures you posted when I first joined this board, Swissy. I am so jealous that you can look at that type of scenery on any given day. You are a very lucky man! Makes me think of the John Denver lyrics, "I know he'd be a poorer man, if he never saw an eagle fly..." Unfortunately, I still have not had the opportunity to see one in person, but will never forget the day I do. To see a bald eagle in the wild is one of the things I plan on doing before I leave this world. There is a place about an hour away from me called "Hawk Mountain." It is on the migratory path of many different types of birds of prey. It is amazing to hike up there during migration season and see all the incredible birds that come through there (was actually the first almost official date I had with the girl who ended up being my wife!) By their statistics, they see several bald eagles fly through there every year, but I still haven't been able to catch one. Someday, I guess. Thanks for the pictures. These kinds of shots never seem to get old for me. Thanks again you lucky bastard!

Great pictures! I was in Homer and Seward in July and fell in love with Alaska, one of the prettiest places I have ever been.
 
i have had an opportunity to photograph some raptors as well, they are beautiful birds. this baldy was in a rehab center i visit in NH, someone actually shot this bird in the wing. not to thread jack....

Thus the PM. I guess I will just have to live of the Photoshop pics. to get my Swissy fix.
 
Did you guys notice the difference between the eagle in rehad and the ones in the wild? Really powerful contrast IMO...definitely something worth reflecting on.
 
Not to beat up my state, but if that happened in New York City, some enterprising New York would immediately set up a fried eagle kebab stand. Those are beautiful and may they always be preserved. :thumbs:

When I was in Alaska and after, living in the Pac Northwest, I saw eagles often enough that they were no big deal. Now that I'm in Denver and only see one maybe two a year, I miss them.

I hear watching them fish herring in Homer is a sight to behold. I never made it south of the Kasilaf (sp?) when I was in the area, at least not on land.
