Recently, I have not been a happy camper! For the past month I have suffered with a severe case of dry mouth. It started slowly. First at night waking up often to drink water and then it progressed into the whole day, 24 hours.

I'm not one for medical doctors, unless forced, last resort, I will not take drugs. However, the dryness got so bad, my tongue was sticking to my pallet and I started to freak out. I was away from home and pulled into an emergency clinic. They found nothing! Diagnosing myself, I suggested that perhaps I had thrush or Candida. They gave me drugs for both but no luck!

Three days later I visited my family doctor. I explained my symptoms and mentioned that I smoked 3 to 4 cigars a day. He immediately discounted cigars by saying, I wish it were cigars! - mmmmm! He did a zillion tests including blood, swabbed my tongue for fungus etc and found nothing. Right at this time I got a minute blister under my tongue and another on the tip. I suggested to my doctor the possibility of having a herpes outbreak. Blisters usually occur on the lips and you can get canker sores in the mouth. He said that it may be possible and so I started treating myself for cold sores in the mouth.

One week later, now kind of desperate, I went to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist. I told him I smoked 3 to 4 cigars a day, he discounted that the symptoms were from cigars. Checked me over and said, "good news, you have nothing wrong" - yeah right! I suggested to the specialist about a herpes outbreak, he too said it was a possibility.

Ok, so here I am suffering and no light at the end of the tunnel from either my doctor or the ENT specialist. I decide to call up my dentist. I figure this guy probably knows more about mouths than a DR or Specialist.

My dentist takes one look in my mouth and notices small red dots on my pallet and diagnoses Nicotine Stomatitis Click Here for description

Fortunately I don't have it nearly as bad as some of the photographs my dentist showed me and those I have found on line. However, for some reason my saliva glands in my pallet have been targeted (so he (dentist) and I think) and hence the severe dry mouth.

I haven't had a cigar for 6 days now and have slowly begun to heal. Apparently I should get back to normal in one to two weeks. Naturally I'm hoping that I will be able to continue my love of cigars, only reduce to one, maybe two smokes a day. If the condition comes back, obviously, to my dismay, I will have to stop cigars permanently. My health is more important!

This is so ironic! Recently, well, since joining CP, I, just like most other people, got the collectors bug. I am on my way to a great collection. I
have purchased two new humidors and acquired some great sticks, many of them with some age.

Best case scenario - my reduction in cigar smoking quantity will not bring back the condition. Worse case scenario - find a new hobby ??? :)

Has anyone experienced this or a similar condition? I do know that people over 45 are more susceptible, that's me at 53 :whistling:

Thanks for listening.

Brian

yes i have experienced exactly what you went thru, and lived to tell about it. my dentist and i trade cigars and he explained that i should cut back. i now smoke two cigars a day, max, without those pesky growths, which freaked me out also. good luck!

Damn Brian that sucks. I have never heard of that one before. But hopefully it's just a couple of weeks layoff and then you can get back to 3 sticks a day.

My personal analysis is that it has to do with an allergic reaction you are having to the Padron 64 and 26 lines. Just to be safe, pack them all up and ship them to me for analysis. I'll let you know the results in a few months. :)

Hey Sack,

That's very encouraging! Were you a 3 to 4 cigars a day smoker before the cut back?

Brian

Brian,

I've never experienced that but then I don't smoke with that frequency. When I smoke several days in a row, it's usually one cigar a day. When I smoke up to three in a day, I usually have off days before and after.

I hope you heal up well and can get back to a moderate level of lifelong enjoyment.

Wilkey

I've never been a 3-4 cigar a day person but I did do a pack a day with a cigar or two for many years. Never heard of your condition before but I'll keep watch for it. Hope everything turns out well for ya.

From reading the info, it appears the heat of the smoke and not the nicotine is the offender. It seems one should stay away from cigars that burn hot ie. the smaller ring guages and loosly packed cigars.

Doc.

Got it from pipe smoking.
Was no big deal, cut back on my pipes and haven't been bothered since.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the feedback guys, appreciate it!
Quick question for sack and DR.
Did you both experience the dry mouth I have described?

Doc.

Makes sense Doc. I guess it could also be smoking in a hurry thereby creating a hotter cigar smoke, rather than relaxing through the smoke.

Damn SIR! Throw in dirty jokes, drinking, lewd sex, and sea stories, and you don't have long to live!

Heya Brian. Sounds like the cure will likely add to some anxiety, but it'll be worth it. Hang in there, man!

I thought this thread was about some hot, Greek chick. :(
Feel better.

edit: Computer is sluggish.
This joke was not SO good to have to double post. :whistling:

I've had a different sort of problem from cigar smoking. A few months ago, I would get these shooting pains from my eardrum down into my jaw bone. It was sharp and hurt pretty badly.

The doctor suggested it could be caused by grinding your teeth at night or from holding/chewing large gauge cigars with the mouth. Something about stressing the jaw muscle can cause the eardrum to "drop". While not permanent, it is very painful.

I've tried to make an effort to hold cigars in my hand more than my mouth, and I've cut out chewing on pen-caps during work, and I haven't had a shooting jaw pain in a couple weeks now.

You can try gargling with a mixture of salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 1/2 cup water), mixed equally with 3% peroxide solution. I keep a bottle lableled with this mixture (out of reach of children) and it may help the healing, and reduce pain.

Hey Brian, how goes the Nikki Stomatitis :)? Feeling any better?

Did the lay off work?

Thanks for asking Wyatt!

I stopped cigars for about 8 days. The condition has improved but not gone. I still get a very dry tongue at odd times during the day. Kind of jumps on me without warning.

I have been smoking one cigar a day around 11 to 12 AM. However, I have this feeling that it may not be the Greek chick sucking my gums . When I see photographs on line it looks nothing like my pallet. In fact, I think all smokers have a few tiny spots on the soft pallet - check it out with a mirror and flashlight!

The cigars definitely aggravated the condition but whether it is "Nicotine Stomatitis" is debatable (I think). I did ask Sack and Desert Rat if they experienced severe dry mouth, more specifically, dry tongue but got no feedback :(

Very frustrating
