Recently, I have not been a happy camper! For the past month I have suffered with a severe case of dry mouth. It started slowly. First at night waking up often to drink water and then it progressed into the whole day, 24 hours.
I'm not one for medical doctors, unless forced, last resort, I will not take drugs. However, the dryness got so bad, my tongue was sticking to my pallet and I started to freak out. I was away from home and pulled into an emergency clinic. They found nothing! Diagnosing myself, I suggested that perhaps I had thrush or Candida. They gave me drugs for both but no luck!
Three days later I visited my family doctor. I explained my symptoms and mentioned that I smoked 3 to 4 cigars a day. He immediately discounted cigars by saying, I wish it were cigars! - mmmmm! He did a zillion tests including blood, swabbed my tongue for fungus etc and found nothing. Right at this time I got a minute blister under my tongue and another on the tip. I suggested to my doctor the possibility of having a herpes outbreak. Blisters usually occur on the lips and you can get canker sores in the mouth. He said that it may be possible and so I started treating myself for cold sores in the mouth.
One week later, now kind of desperate, I went to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist. I told him I smoked 3 to 4 cigars a day, he discounted that the symptoms were from cigars. Checked me over and said, "good news, you have nothing wrong" - yeah right! I suggested to the specialist about a herpes outbreak, he too said it was a possibility.
Ok, so here I am suffering and no light at the end of the tunnel from either my doctor or the ENT specialist. I decide to call up my dentist. I figure this guy probably knows more about mouths than a DR or Specialist.
My dentist takes one look in my mouth and notices small red dots on my pallet and diagnoses Nicotine Stomatitis Click Here for description
Fortunately I don't have it nearly as bad as some of the photographs my dentist showed me and those I have found on line. However, for some reason my saliva glands in my pallet have been targeted (so he (dentist) and I think) and hence the severe dry mouth.
I haven't had a cigar for 6 days now and have slowly begun to heal. Apparently I should get back to normal in one to two weeks. Naturally I'm hoping that I will be able to continue my love of cigars, only reduce to one, maybe two smokes a day. If the condition comes back, obviously, to my dismay, I will have to stop cigars permanently. My health is more important!
This is so ironic! Recently, well, since joining CP, I, just like most other people, got the collectors bug. I am on my way to a great collection. I
have purchased two new humidors and acquired some great sticks, many of them with some age.
Best case scenario - my reduction in cigar smoking quantity will not bring back the condition. Worse case scenario - find a new hobby ???
Has anyone experienced this or a similar condition? I do know that people over 45 are more susceptible, that's me at 53 :whistling:
Thanks for listening.
