So back in the stone age me and my buddy were fairly frequent golfers but I moved away for college and work and lost interest in it some with no one to play with.

Anyway my 19 yo son is hanging up his lacrosse cleats and I asked him if he would be interested in trying golf and to my surprise he said yes. So a trip to the driving range is planned. It also helps the county parks and rec offers lessons at one of there public course's/driving ranges which is in the plan for him and me since I was a self taught hacker. At 19, and never picked up a club before, hes a blank slate so fingers crossed.

Now here is the $1M question. If he does want to pursue this Im going to be in the market for some new sticks for him and me. This will be a casual thing at least in the beginning so I dont have a lot of interest in dumping a crap ton of $ into gear right out of the gate. Ive gone down that rabbit hole with other hobbies.

So I see two options here, either a used set of a fairly well regarded clubs or maybe new clones. I've looked online and entered his and my dimensions at a couple different retailers and it looks like we fall in the standard size standard flex basket.

There is also the mega easy button of getting a full Callaway set from Costco just shipped to my door. I literally have never bought anything from Costco I didnt like so I trust that it is a decent deal on a quality item.

So a penny for your thoughts.

3, 2, 1, go...

So many possibilities!

I am an old school golfer who likes heavier static weight and heavier swing weight clubs. I bought a new set of Wilson staff Dynapower Forged with the recoil Dart F3 graphite shaft for $1,000 and I don't like them. They are too light.

Since they are forged, so they can be bent to a person's individual specs. Your height and weight really have nothing to do with the proper lie angle of the club, that is all based on your Club position at impact.

New technology clubs are dramatically different than the technology from even just 8 or 9 years ago. They have been able to create clubs that are lighter in weight, hit the ball further and higher, and spin more as well.

I would certainly not go for top of the line irons which are $200 to $240 per club. Just an fyi, the vast majority of the performance of a golf club comes from the shaft, not the head.

I would be happy to give you any further information if you are interested, just PM me. If in case either of you would be interested, I would sell my new Wilson staffs for $750 ...... five iron through gap wedge.

I would also be happy to help you select something to your liking through eBay for example.

If it were me, I would look on FB Marketplace. You can pick up a nice used set of Callaways, Pings, etc. for $100-$400, usually including a bag. They are not the latest technology, but does that really matter in the beginning?

I have a set of Callaway Big Bertha irons that I bought at least 20 years ago. They are very forgiving, and targeted to people like me, who play golf for fun. They are not designed for super serious players, or those that are trying to make a living playing golf. If I were to purchase a set of clubs with the latest technology, the return on investment would be zero. I’m just not that good of a golfer that it would make a huge difference. The magic isn’t in the clubs, it’s in the fundamentals of your swing.

Good luck in your search, and have fun!

If you were not on the other side of the U.S. I would say just come grab my old set and be done with it.

The Kirkland set I've seen at my local Costco's seem like a pretty good deal. CL or FB Marketplace is another good option to find a decent set of clubs for a good price.

I've been slowly updating my set of clubs over the last 6 months. Got a 3 wood for x-mas from the wife, then just replaced the driver, and hoping to get a new set of wedges next month (I have a friend that builds custom wedges).
