I have a four year old boy. I've recently been searching for books to read to him. In that search, I came across some boxes of books from my teenage years. I have always enjoyed reading, and these books are all very special to me. All fantasy Books. Sword and Sorcery and Sci Fi.

Burroughs and Robert E. Howard are two of my favorites from my early teens. My formative years. I am 50 yrs old. I decided that they are too advanced to read to my boy, but I decided to give them another whirl.
I've started with Burroughs 'Martian" Series. Book 1 of 11 "A Princess of Mars" and am thoroughly enjoying it. I'd forgotten just how talented a writer Burroughs was.

After I get through all the Burroughs books, I'll probably read through Robert E. Howard's "Conan the Barbarian"

What were your favorite reads during your formative years?

(we already know Playboy is in the list) ;)

I was similar to you Monk. I was into Sci-Fi and Superheroes. Some of my favorites were

The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King
All of the JRR Tolkien books
Batman books
Star Wars books that were supposed to have occured after the original movies

I've been into WW2 and Vietnam non-fiction books for awhile. Unfortunately, I do not have a favorite author. I definitely do need to read MUCH MORE though.

I'm currently reading: Pour Your Heart Into It by Howard Schultz (Starbucks book - It's for my training/promotion)

On deck: Double Cross Blind - a fictional WW2 book...Looking forward to it! $6 on sale at B&N :)

Larry Niven, Ben Bova, Stanislaw Lem, and when I was feeling particularly hardcore, Robert L. Forward. Now that was some hard-ass science writing but enjoyable and imaginative.

Prior to that, it was mostly comic books, believe it or not.

I was an avid reader as a teen and Burroughs was one of my favorites. I must have come by that honest because I was given a full set of the Tarzan books from my grandfather who had enjoyed them as a teen also. I still have all of those old dusty 1914 editions of the early books. I also read a great deal of A. Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books. Good stuff!

It's times like these when people tell me how great books were that I regret never really picking any up and reading them... guess it aint too late to start.

I have went back and revisted some books I didn't appreciate when I was younger. I don't think books, for the most part, have an age limiit. I'm not afraid to admit that I finally read all the Harry Potter books about 3 months ago. I might re-read the Tolkien books soon.
