Suggestions for a beginner

Hey Alan,

If you are at Spec's give Maredsous a try, there is a brune and triple. They are great, plus their ABV is between 8% -10%.

La Bestia Aimable is another good local, plus Real Ale 15th anni(RIS).

Its all on preference, but some starters I would try to seek:

Belgian Ales:
  • Rochefort 8 and 10
  • Gouden Carolus Carolus D'Or - Cuvée Van De Keizer
  • Tröegs Mad Elf
  • Allagash Curieux
  • Delirium Tremens
  • Matilda
  • Redemption
  • Grimbergen Dubbel
  • Westmalle Trappist Dubbel
Stouts/Porters/Brown Ales:
  • Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout
  • Velvet Merlin (Merkin)
  • Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout
  • Old #38 Stout\
  • Serpents Stout
  • Buried Hatchet Stout
  • Saint Arnold Winter Stout
  • Stone Imperial Russian Stout
  • Terrapin Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout
  • Alaskan Baltic Porter
  • Victory At Sea Coffee Vanilla Imperial Porter
  • Bully!Porter
  • Fuller's London Porter
  • Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter
  • Steelhead Scotch Porter
  • CoCoNut Porter
  • Ølfabrikken Porter
  • Hotel
  • Sinebrychoff Porter
  • Bolita Brown Double Nut Brown Ale
  • Palo Santo Marron
  • Coffee Bender
  • Bender
Pales/IPA's/DIPA's:
  • Sweetwater 420 Extra Pale Ale
  • Gumballhead
  • AleSmith IPA
  • Nelson Rye
  • Hoppy Feet
  • 90 Minute
  • Lost Continent
  • Hop Stoopid
  • Just Outstanding IPA
  • Blind Pig
  • Dreadnaught
  • Stone Ruination
Sours/Flanders/Lambics:
  • Consecration
  • Temptation
  • La Roja
  • Rodenbach Classic
  • Duchesse De Bourgogne
  • Raspberry Tart
  • Riserva
Old Ales/Barleywines/Strong Ales:
  • Dragon's Milk Oak Barrel Ale
  • Old Viscosity
  • Yakima Twilight
  • Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale
  • Firestone Abacus
  • Doggie Claws
  • J.W. Lees Harvest Ale
  • Saint Arnold Divine Reserve #10
  • Troegs The Flying Mouflan
  • Insanity
  • Old Stock
  • The Bruery Anniversary Ales
  • Old Engine Oil
  • Founders Curmudgeon
  • Third Coast Old Ale
These are worth a try, remember if you can't find it distributed in your area there are always those who are willing to trade ;)
Altogether they should start you off in the right direction...just like cigars your palate will change and you can really narrow down the styles you may like and the characteristics between different styles.

Have fun and Cheers!

Thanks for the list!

So many choices and so little time!

Anything From Great Lakes Brewing Company You Should Try. They Have Begun to Expand Now So Its Possible They Are Near you. I Know They Started By You Guessed It The Great Lakes But Like i Said Have Begun to Expand And I Have Found Them In NC Even. The Nosforatu Is The Best But It Is Seasonal With Dortmunder Gold Being Their Primary Beer.

Ken

I opened a 25oz bottle of the Tripel Saturday night while cooking dinner. WOW, great beer, thanks for the suggestion, but I should have waited until after I ate!

Edit: because I can't spell.
