So I was in a B&M today, not going to name any names though, and saw two beetles wandering about in the graycliff/high end camacho/davidoff glass display case. I told one of the guys about them and they pulled out those sticks that they were crawling on found htem, killed them, put the sticks back in, and went on their merry way. Now I know for a fact that these guys use beetle traps and that the beetles are more attracted to the pheromones the traps give off (sex) the the urge to eat. However, how can they be so calm about seeing beetles? Do the traps really work THAT well, and if so, why don't we all have them? Also, wouldn't there be the issue of finding out which cigar, and those around it, hatched these guys because wouldn't there be further eggs and larvae in those?
I understand that beetles are an issue you have no choice but to deal with in the industry, however, how can they afford to be so nonchalant about them?
Chime in ya'll, especially B&M owners. Being a beetle fearing man, I'd like to learn as much as I can about how I can become so nonchalant.

Chris,

I'd flip a lid if I found beetles in my store's humidor. I saw a box a couple of years ago that had a beetle infestation. The box was removed QUICKLY and placed in the freezer until I could send them back. For days, every box in the humidor was checked and re-checked to make sure they didn't spread. Can't understand why he was so nonchalant. That's my $0.02.

Great answer, Israel.

My local B&M's response is somewhere between the two, but closer to Chris' B&M's reaction.

I am surprised at the reaction that the staff of the B&M had, although they were probably $5/hr part time help. I would hope that if the owner was there he would have taken it much more seriously.

Freaking out would be a kind way to describe my reaction. It's bound to happen eventually. You just can't control the sticks until you have them. Very scary. I'd most likely box up the beetle infested ones and immediately send them to Robbiexor. He will smoke anything!

Having worked in a couple B&Ms I can attest that it is not uncommon to have a beetle or twenty show up uninvited. Most plant tobacco beetle traps to counter it. I also wouldn't put purchases from a B&M in with aging stock without freezing them first.
