Well B/SOTL, I am in need of some advice. I am at a point where I need a bigger traveldor, I have thought about a cedar lined aluminum case. Or just a bigger plastic type i.e. Otter Box, X-treme, Road Warrior etc. I am curious as to your preference, I like the look of the aluminm briefcase type but I fear it may be just that looks. Although the "egg crate" type foam of the plastic ones concerns me a little especially when it comes to stacking on top of one another. Any and all feedback would be appreciated, after all you guy's wouldn't want the smokes I bring to a Herf for you to smoke to be F'd up right? :laugh: TIA
 
I have the 30 count X-Treme Rod sells thru the CP Store, and I LOVE it. I filled that sucker up and took it to the PacNW Herf hosted by BBS this past fall, and it works flawlessly. it traveled well, as did the cigars inside. The foam trays were great, and it even has a pressure relief for relieving pressure during travel and elevation changes.

The only thing I changed was I took out the round little puck for H2O solution and put in a digital Hygrometer (Also bought thru Rod and the CP store) and I use Viper's flat bead sheets for humidification. Works like a CHAMP.

It'll be a welcomed addition out on my boat this summer... and dipnetting salmon on the Copper River... and any deployments for wildfires... and... and...

If you're worried about the plastic versions, I think you have nothing to worry about! It is rugged, tough and ready to be abused.

My opinion, of course... :whistling:
 
The great thing about the Otterbox and/or X-treme travel humidors is that they are waterproof too. I have been using them for years and years and don't they can be beat.

BTW - the Puck (www.getthepuck.com) was designed specifically to replace the existing "floral foam" humidifier that they come with. :thumbs:

I have both the aluminum one is great for when I have to pack flat, but the Otter box is best for protecting your cigars. The other plus is the seal on the Otter box. YMMV
 
Another vote for the Otter Box. :thumbs: I have a 5, 15, and 32 count. The 32 count even has a valve so you can depresserize it before opening after having it on a plane.

Like tone-ny, I have both and almost exclusively use the otter box. The cedar lined aluminum one looks great and I sometimes use it to move from friend's house to friend's house, but for long serious trips I only use the otter box. I own a couple of sizes depending on the length of the trip and they have not failed me yet. :thumbs:

Steve (Slevy007) had one of the x-treme 50 counts at the Quad State Herf II. That thing is enormous!!! The description say's it can hold 50 Churchill sized stogies, but from what I saw, it can hold 50 A sized monsters. Complete with layers upon layers of foam cigar holders. Steve must have had atleast 40 sticks in there, and he still had room for more!!!. I'm thinking of getting one of these for the Vegas trip.
 
Another vote here for the Otterbox type..... I bought a smaller version from Cigarmony and also a larger one from e-bay a couple of yrs ago.... I took the larger one x-country packed with smokes.... worked awesome... never worried about it in the back of the pickup in case it rained and water got under the cover.
 
Thank you to those of you who have chimed in, I have been swayed towards the plastic. Now it will be X-treme Vs. Otter Box, and for humidification I am going to with "The Puck" thanks again everyone.

FYI - The X-treme and the Otterboxes are one in the same except for the plastic used on the X-tremes is shiney vs the dull finish of the Otterbox. I was told that X-treme actually purchased the molds for the larger versions from Otterbox. (Otterbox no longer makes the larger counts but I have been trying to talk them back into for almost a year now).

I have a 5ct plastic, made from material remarkably similar to bakelite. It travels with me almost daily and has not held up very well. First drop took out the lanyard hook - no big deal since I don't recall using it. Second drop took out one of the lid closure clasps. It still works on one, but I'll be replacing it shortly.
 
I had one of the flat style Aluminum ones. If I remember right it held 18, and was the foam interior also. I didn't keep a very good seal, so pitched it. Now I have three of the otter Boxes, the 2ct, 10ct and 32ct. The 10ct and 32ct have The Puck in them, and they work well. I even lined the 10ct with Cedar, and will be lining the 32ct with cedar in the near future.
 
I got the 5-count Otterbox off cbid shortly after discovering CP, and have been nothing but pleased with it! I also use Viper's flat humidifier and it works out very well.

My only issue is the travel 'dors are not immune to the Universal Law of Humidor Capacity, in that what you think you'll need is never big enough. I'd say the 10-count is the minimum useful size for a 2-3 day trip. After all, we need our choices!
