Does anyone pre-cut their cigars before putting them in the otter box or any other kind of travel humidor? Would there be any downside in doing this?

I've never done this but I can't think of a reason why it would affect the cigars. They're already open on one end so cutting the other end shouldn't be an issue. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

P.S. Why would you want to pre-cut them anyway? Isn't it just as easy to bring along a cutter when you travel?

Sure it is easy to bring along a cutter, but it is one less thing to worry about when packing for a hiking trip over seas. And if it gets lost then the only other options would be a dirty knife or my teeth.

I've often pre-cut before getting on a plane. I think with this post 9/11 society we live in, lighters and cutters would be frowned upon. I think things may have changed, but can't be sure as I've not been on a trip with cigars in a long while.

Anyone know the status on this?

TSA? When I was traveling with ISOMs, I left my cutter behind, assuming that it would show up on X-ray, and I did not want it to be the reason I was searched.

...not sure what the 'official' position is on this but we just went / returned from Vegas. I packed a cutter and matches in our checked baggage, and on the return trip, my wife had bought several butane lighters and they went into the checked baggage as well (which I know for sure got x-rayed...saw them do it). No issues going or coming..

Good Luck - B.B.S.

Cutters are now allowed in your carry-on as well as checked baggage. You cannot technically bring re-fillable lighters on any plain...explosion hazard. But about the pre-cutting...just don't cut too far down...or it will unravel while your on your trip...make sure you keep plenty of cap on it. That's my 0.02.

I've precut mine in my travels to avoind any hassles. Never know when you will run across the TSA member that decides the cutter could be used as a weapon and confinscate it. But I've also have peeled the caps off cigars without a problem. The last time I have my Colibri lighter after the 9/11 crap, the airport security was going to confinscate it. So after like 30 mins of going back to the security line and outside to drain the lighter...I was finally able to get it through. I have since then refused to take it any where.

Think it depends on who's working security. The last time I flew, I packed my lighter and had no issues, but going through the security checkpoint with my otter box in a carry on, they spotted my cutter on the xray, and made me pull it out. Told me that that sharp of a blade wasn't getting on the plane. Thankfully, it was a cheap plastic cutter, and not an expensive one, as it got left at the airport.

I wonder how many employees of the TSA are cigar smokers!

I dunno but an engineer at work who regularly travels had his torch on him not thinking and had it taken, a nice one too. He'll probably never see it again..

I guess the only way you'd POTENTIALLY have an issue is if you were to carry them on-board as opposed to checking the cutter in a suitcase. As long as it's checked and goes into the cargo-hold it should be fine.

I carry it on as I rarely check baggage. It has so little metal they don't even notice it. If it gets confiscated it's no big loss.

Thanks for that information Fetter.

we had no problems bringing lighters/cutters on the plane (ONLY Canadian flights, US has banned them). you can always bring a cheap cutter and lighter just in case. The high density metals show up darker on the color x-ray, so bring plastic ones.. and no, there is nothing wrong with pre-cutting. enjoy your trip :) where ya going?

I have flown twice in the past month, and the first time they said "NO LIGHTERS PERIOD". I have heard this is a matter of the working security, though.

As for my Xikar, I had no problem on either trip.
