I decided to setup my laptop to go wardriving tonight. I drove up the street about 4 miles, and netstumbler counted 110 networks. Most of them were wide open.

Anyone ever try doing this? Netstumbler is a great program. :)

You wouldn't believe how many people leave their username/password saved on their cable/dsl modems: 192.168.0.1

I'm asking because I'll bet I'm guilty of whatever it is you found and I want to make the necessary changes to protect myself ;)

The act of driving around in a vehicle with a laptop computer, an antenna, and an 802.11 wireless LAN adapter to exploit existing wireless networks. Set on promiscuous mode, the wireless adapter, typically a NIC, will receive packets within its range. Wardriving exploits wireless networks that have ranges that extend outside the perimeter of buildings in order to gain free internet access or illegal access to an organization’s data. One safeguard against wardriving is using the WEP encryption standard.

Computer hackers captured the names, Social Security numbers and other information of more than 30,000 students and staff at George Mason University earlier this month, school officials said Monday.

The university, which is in Fairfax, near Washington D.C., discovered on Jan. 3 that intruders had hacked into a server containing the protected information, school spokesman Daniel Walsch said. He said the university notified all students and staff.

I do that sometimes when I am on a business trip... And need to connect to the internet.. I will drive around until I get a nice signal from a Wireless LAN.. and go from there..

Interesting some of the things you can do or find.. Some ppl I tell ya.. and the worst is alot of businesses that use wifi...leave themselves so open.. But than again I always send them a letter..introducing myself as a network security specialist.. :D better than cold calling :thumbs:
 
I know my wireless is encrypted and safe but I do appreciate the other wireless units in my complex that aren't.
And on another note, I remember reading about a guy who was caught driving around and d/ling kiddy porn threw un protected network systems this way.
Seems as thou he had multiple laptops in vehicle to use other peoples ISP's, cops pulled him over cause of funny glow comming from his car lol

Yes, I heard about that. They caught some perv sitting in his car downloading child porn off someone else's network.
