Something I think many take for granted is the care with which that cigar is aged and handled at the factory and at the retailer. A great cigar can be totally ruined by a manufacturer or retailer that mishandles or takes little care in the proper storage of their product. I've had 2 Fuente Short Story's (a fine smoke by most people's standards) that were just the pits because of the conditions at the retailer from which I purchased them, conditions that weren't overly apparent at the time.

I don't think that there is any one thing that makes a cigar great, but there is very many things that can make an otherwise great cigar bad.
