Greetings! Is it the soil? Is it the sun? Is it the hands of a skilled cigar roller? Just exactly what is it that produces a great cigar? Please tell us what you think. Regards, knightlaird

I would say a combination of everything but without great aged tobacco none of the rest really matters.

The wrapper, the blend, the time and place in which the cigar is enjoyed. . .

Something I think many take for granted is the care with which that cigar is aged and handled at the factory and at the retailer. A great cigar can be totally ruined by a manufacturer or retailer that mishandles or takes little care in the proper storage of their product. I've had 2 Fuente Short Story's (a fine smoke by most people's standards) that were just the pits because of the conditions at the retailer from which I purchased them, conditions that weren't overly apparent at the time.

all of the above plus the curing of the of the tobacco, i've read where the fuente family really guards their curing techniques with a passion. i can see why! :cool:

If you have great aged tobacco, but they roll a plugged cigar that you can't get any smoke through what then.
I don't think that there is any one thing that makes a cigar great, but there is very many things that can make an otherwise great cigar bad.

Exactly. Everything has to fall into place, not just one factor....they are all important;

- The seed / stock for the wrapper, filler, and binder
- The aging of all of the above
- The blend
- The construction and roll
- The aging of the finished cigar
- The storage and packaging of the ready to smoke cigar along the trip from the manufacturer to the dealer the end user's home
- The storage at the end user's home
- The cut

...that's why a special cigar is really special; everything has worked out in the right way... :thumbs:

Cheers - B.B.S.
