Well, we're 3 houses off the Barnegat Bay in Toms River, NJ...directly across the bay from Seaside Heights...home of that Jersey Shore show...with any luck, their house will be the only one swept out to Sea.

We're battening down the hatches and preparing for a little wind and rain. I just got back from the food store and they were out of water, bread, milk and dry ice! Everyone is in full panic mode. They're putting up plywood all over the place. I took a walk around my block this afternoon and was talking to the neighbors and most have the metal roll up hurricane window shades down in preparation. All the barrier islands are voluntary evacuation so far.

As for us, we're throwing a Hurricane Party starting Saturday night that should last into Sunday morning. I'll post some pics if we get a chance to cruise around during the storm.

Anyone else in the storms path?

We are! Our ground has 36 inch holes and we could use all of the 12 inches they are talking about. Wish there was a way to make it happen. Today we just had our 60th day over 100, our record being 69 days in 1980. Our forecaster said we will probably break this record. 60 days and less that .25 in. of rain in Texas is bad do-do.

If you are in harms way, be careful, not try and beat Irene.

Bracing here in RI. Got the supplies and whatnot. Gonna tape the big picture window tomorrow. We'll hope for the best!

The Marine in Camp Legeune NC is rather :"so what" at this point; they have food, supplies, and are waiting it out. Been on the phone to him every four hours or so. At this point, he says it's raining heavy and gusting a bit.

I guess if you had to weather a storm, being on a Marine base would be one of the best possible places to stick it out..??

Be safe out there guys....B.B.S.

Gary, this part is downright inspiring!! In the face of a terrible storm, you guys throw a party and enjoy life! Cheers to you brother.

pppssshhh. Im going all out and climbing the tallest tree in my back yard with a stogie in mouth
(phillies blunt of course cause it's gonna get ruined real quick) and take on Irene like
Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump !!!!!

"You call that a storm? Ahh haaaaaahhhhaaaaaa ! " - Lieutenant Dan

Hope everyone stays safe. . . .

I feel for the people on the coast, but I have a big feeling that people in places like here in Fredericksburg Virginia are way over reacting thanks to the local media and the Weather Channel.

The weather channel is def. responsible for the mass hysteria in the grocery stores etc. around here. Its ridiculous how they've sensationalized it just like every other media outlet. Yes its a hurricane, yes it is more serious than other storms, but you really dont have to call it "The worst storm in DECADES!!!" every time you talk about it.

I've been inspired to forgo the getting ready for the storm and go play golf. Not supposed to hit here till Saturday night.

Irene be good to me.

I went back out for more provisions...this trip was inspired by Pat O'Briens in New Orleans

Ingredients:
  • 2 oz light rum
  • 2 oz dark rum
  • 2 oz passion fruit juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • juice of a half a lime
  • 1 Tbsp simple syrup
  • 1 Tbsp grenadine
  • orange slice and cherry for garnish...cherries are for pussies!
Preparation:

  1. Squeeze juice from half a lime into shaker over ice.
  2. Pour the remaining ingredients into the cocktail shaker.
  3. Shake well.
  4. Strain into a hurricane glass.
  5. Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice....like I said, f*ck the cherry!

By the time the storm gets here, we should be in good shape...

PS: also bought a sh*tload of micro brews as a back-up to the she-she drink!

Now all I have to do is FIND A BAG OF FRIGGIN ICE! The profiteers will be selling it on street corners like crack in a few hours!

Looks like a mandatory evacuation for my part of town in CT. We're about 8 houses from the beach.

Fantasy football draft may be touch and go for me tomorrow Gary. I'll PM the league.

In Greensboro, NC. We were hoping for some rain to catch up on percip. levels, but I think all we will get is this overcast sky and wind. Hope yall stay safe up further north along the coast!

I know what you mean about "profiteers", Gary. You'd think we were in the Carolinas, where they always make landfall and peter out as this one will no doubt do.

All for ratings, I guess?

^This. Yesterday on the Weather Channel, they said Manhattan is facing 40' (yes, forty foot) waves and weeks without electricity. Was supposed to leave tomorrow morning for a couple days in DE, but the hotel called yesterday and said they're closed Sunday. Now I have to play wait and see for what looks like will be some wind and rain up north.

Adding insult to injury, the site of my fantasy football draft last night was in a mandatory evacuation zone. First drop of rain didn't fall up here until maybe 30 minutes ago. We still managed to make that work, though.

They just recommended we evacuate. Storm surge could be 5 to 8 ft. over high tide....which translates to about 3 to 6 ft. over ground level.

My house is about 5 ft. above ground level...although my garage is only 2 above GL.

EDIT: They just announced a mandatory evacuation of the barrier islands...Island Beach State Park to Point Pleasant....and all of Long Beach Island. They just closed the East bound lanes on both bridges leading onto each.
