"Why do people smoke $20 cigars?"

His first guess was they're really rich and they don't know what to do with their money.

That's not my answer.

I thought about it and I thought there were two answers in my case, which are closely related.

My first line of thought went like this: a $20 cigar probably ins't twice as good as a $10 cigar. So economically there is no justification for it. But the $20 cigar might have a certain thing to it, like the perfect blend of wrapper and shape, that you just can't find in any other cigar, that you'e willing to pay the extra for. Eash person has their special cigars they're willing to pay more for; a good example would be plenty of people pay extra for the Padron high end stuff, but thing the Zino Platinums are a waste of money.

The other train of thought was that cigars are like any other hobby in that there is a progression. You might start out putting a set of $20 Wal-Mart chrome hubcaps on your ride and thinking it looks sweet. A while later you are on a message board discussing the relative merits of two sets of rims that cost about $2000 a set. As you get more advanced into a hobby, you just start to spend more money on it and your tastes progress I guess.

So what's your answer to the $20 question?

I think there is an air of sophistication with a $20 smoke. I have only smoked $20 cigars a few times in my life, and I have to say they really weren't all that much better than a $10 smoke. But I smoked them on my Wedding day, and on the night my Daughter was born.

The reason I buy em is the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder I have acquired since joining this board. :p

Why do people drive Mercedes instead of Fords? Why do people drink Port instead of MD 20/20? Why do people wear Calvin Klein instead of good 'ol Wranglers?

Because we live in the greatest Country on the face of the earth and can do what we want to! If you can afford it and want it, smoke it!

PS: I agree with Inflatus, the $20 cigars are SOOOO much cheaper than the $40 smokes! :p

I would have to say because I truly enjoy them. However, I always choose quality over quantity. I prefer to smoke two $20 cigars a week as oposed to eight $5 cigars a week. Thats not to say that all expensive cigars are good or all cheap ones are bad.

Because I can! I am the other school of though, give me 8 $5 cigars. I can't afford to like those $20 cigars. LMAO

When I smoke a $20 cigar the smoking experience feels more special, more like an event. It is usually something that is planned and you have set some special time aside specifically to enjoy that great smoke. These are my most enjoyable cigar experiences where I find myself fully relaxed and refreshed. I always consider the $20 very well spent.

I think another reason I smoke $20 cigars is because its kind of a consolation to myself for not being able to smoke Cubans. Damn embargo :(

Ask her how much her make-up and perfume costs after you tell he you are smoking a $30 cigar. But makesure you are at least 10 feet away as she'll go for the nearest heavy object she can find.

Well I am going with "because I can" however I must say that a $20 dollar cigar will often sit in my humidor for a good long time waiting for the perfect time to smoke. A good example of this would be the one and only Gurkha Centurian XX that I had for a good long time (thanks to a bomb from this board). This was smoke a month ago at my wedding and was the best damn cigar I have ever smoked.

I think there is the group that simply have the money to smoke these daily and really dont realize how much a $20 dollar cigar means to the average guy like myself. Those people make me envious but hey maybe some day I will be rich to :p.

I am currently trying to amass a collection of 20 or so really high end cigars. Simply to say I have or HAVE had them at one time or another, the hunt is often just as fun as the smoke.

Flaw in your plan Emo... she used to pitch softball so she can hurl fairly heavy and hard objects a fair distance with higher velocity!

Actually, she doesn't mind... she likes that I have something to enjoy and unwind with after a long 24 hour shift of dealing with morons! she says it makes me less cranky than normal.... whatever that means? :0

Because it is more special/rarer to me than their 20 dollar bottle of wine.

Because that's how much they cost. If I got them for $18 ... then they would only be a measly $18 cigar ... now wouldn't they.
