What’s Your Latest Purchase - 2021

I'm a fan of the Warped La Hacienda blend & the Warped Don Reynaldo blend but both have consistent issues with tunneling.
This is a bit odd, as both are rolled by different factories, and my purchase of respective boxes was from different vendors.
Love the blends but I hate cigars that tunnel.
Sounds like it may be a humidification issue

Sounds like it may be a humidification issue

Yes, that is always a potential when tunneling rears its ugly head but I believe the issue may be the roll aka bunching, particularly for the La Haciendas. These clearly have (visual) issues with voids within the bunching. I can't figure out what is going on with the Don Reynaldos but they seem pretty soft to the touch so, I'm guessing they also have 'volume' issues with the bunching.
Weird thing is every cigar from both boxes have had the issues, some more so, and some less. I keep all of my cigars stored the same so, if it's a humidity issue, I would be surprised.
Years ago I really loved the My Father Flor de las Antillas, both the regular & the maduro. I always had a great experience with these. I purchased another box, and this box was full of under filled, loosely bunched rolls. Every cigar in that box tunneled; I eventually tossed the last 1/3rd of the box. I also never bought them again. I also see me avoiding future purchases of the Don Reynaldo & the La Hacienda. There are just too many cigars on the market to invite such major repeat burn issues into my rotation. That is a shame as I really love both blends.

You can do what you want with the data that is presented before you, but it sounds more like a humidity issues that would lead to the cigars being improperly stored.

I would agree with Paul. If you have multiple boxes and “every” cigar is having issues, it would make more sense to suspect humidity issues than manufacturing issues.

Thanks again @akpreacher Tim for your input on the tunneling issue & as I stated earlier the issue of humidification, "is always a potential when tunneling rears its ugly head." From reading available information tunneling is potentially promoted by a number of factors, albeit humidity issues seem to be high on the list.

I located this very interesting thread from 2012 in which Jon Drew actually replaced a box of cigars with a similar issue.

There are some very informative comments in that thread.
There is a cross section photo within the thread that demonstrates a visual void in the bunching. Most every stick from my box of Warped La Hacienda has this very issue. Also, as previously mentioned the Don Reynaldos are quite loosely rolled, just as the box of Flor de las Antillas was.

As per the three boxes I had/have with tunneling issues, they all had these issues right out of the box/ROTT. I know I have stated here at CP at least twice that I smoke a stick from a 'new' box pretty much as soon as I get them in hand. It is a good way for me to have a baseline for future reference on the cigars I purchase. The three boxes in question with the tunneling issues never had an opportunity for me to properly store them, or to improperly store them; they had the issue right outta the gate. In the case of these three boxes, I doubt humidity issues are the culprit, particularly when the boxes retain the tunneling issues after prolonged storage conditions, conditions identical to many other boxes I have stewing, boxes that do not have any cigars with tunneling issues. My experience with the My Father Flor de las Antillas especially points to a construction issue with the last, particular box that I purchased; much more so than any potential for a humidification issue. Why? Because I had cigars from this box stored for nearly three years. Any potential for a humidification issue would have certainly been mitigated during a three year period.

With as many boxes as I have purchased over the past 14 years I feel fortunate that only these three boxes have had the tunneling issues.
How do I deal with that? Simple. I don't purchase those particular cigars going forward. :)

I have now smoked approx. 15 cigars over the last three weeks or so. Macanudo Maduro, Romeo y Julieta 1875, Arto Fuente, Oliva O Series, Montecristo White, etc. About a week ago, I headed to my local cigar lounge for the first time for some advice on what to try next. He set me up with Don Pepin Garcia JJ and an El Gueguense Robusto. I have been saving them for a nice evening in my lounge (garage). Last night was that night! Pulled out the El Gueguense, Gave it a great cut, toasted it up nice, started puffing away, and enjoyed it over about an hour and 15 mins.

Here is where I need to know, what the hell happened?

About 1/2 through, I had a buzz (which rarely happens), so I was like "yeah, this is nice." so I kept smoking it, to the end, about 2 inches left. I stood up to go get something and then it hit me, I mean like buzz buzz, like when I was in 6th grade and dipped Copenhagen for the first time. About 5 mins later, I was over the toilet dry heaving. Feeling a little better, I decided to sit on the couch and watch some tv with the kiddos. During that time, my head was pounding, and my vision was a bit off. I drank water took an Excedrin and went to sleep. This morning all is well.

1. What happened
2. Why did it happen
3. How do I keep it from happening again

Thanks!

1. Nicotine sickness
2. Probably just a stronger cigar than you’re used to.
3. Keep something sugary on hand. Drink a soda, have some candy.

Drink coke or a sugary beverage along with the cigar and eat a decent meal first until you build up a tolerance

Go find you an Opus X “power ranger” or and LFD “double ligero” These will help with tolerance 🤣 or listen to everyone else and drink a sugary beverage of your choice while smoking…

Cigars have various levels of strength depending on what you are smoking, but there are ways to counteract the side effects. Some cigars you'll barely notice any effect and others can easily lead you down the path you just described. One key thing to do is find out how strong a cigar is before you smoke it. If you are going to smoke something on the stronger side, it would help you out a lot to eat something first. A high intake of nicotine on an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster. Also, if you are feeling light head from a cigar, have something sugary on stand by. A lot of people will drink a soda while they smoke for that very reason. If you are at home and the effect hits you hard a teaspoon of sugar will go a long way. One last thing if you smoke cigars fast they can effect you a lot harder as your body is taking in the strong nicotine at fast rate. A lot of times when I feel that coming down I'll slow down smoking or even stop for a bit.

Lol tunneling while smoking rott is a dead giveaway. Many B&Ms and retailers are notorious for over humidifying their cigars and it can take weeks to rectify this with proper storage. Another symptom of over humidification is a cigar that feels under filled.

I agree with what everyone but @modo22 said. If you look at the cigar online that you picked, its rated as FULL! Until you get further into the hobby and take the advice about a full stomach and sugary drink, I'd recommend avoiding that category all together.

The Preacher man is correct, improperly stored and over humidified…

Every cigar is like a 'relationship' as you should smoke the individual cigar, on the cigars' terms.
Be it lighter, or stronger fare, small, or large ring gauge, length of the vitola, draw, etc., the cigar will dictate how you should smoke the cigar, or if you should toss it, which happens infrequently but it can happen.
Sounds like you got too much nicotine in your system, and hopefully, you learned something from that.
Stronger, more powerful cigars should be smoked with a bit more caution, than say, lighter, less powerful fare.
Lesson learned, hopefully.
