Any Gym Rats Here?

Just finished a killer KB workout today, every minute on the minute (EMOM):

3 rounds:
KB floor press
Single Arm squeeze press
SA raised push up
DA (double arm) curl
SA hammer curl
DA curl to shoulder press
DA overhead tricep extension
Close grip push up
DA swing

Then finished off with a 1 mile jog. Not gonna lie, I suck at pushups. I'm DEAD, tired and hungry!

Pffft...you guys have to pay and go to a gym? All I need is a couple kitchen chairs and a mop handle.🤣

I used ChatGPT to create a KB and running program, for 2 weeks. Pretty cool. It will even take your KB weights you have and your mile pace and make the program even more streamlined to you.

Funny this came up at this time. I'm a mess and getting worse. Trained in karate with my kids for nearly 15 years, 3-4x per week, have a fully equipped gym in the basement. But when I started living/working out of a Chicago apartment about 15 years ago, I just quit everything, and I'm a freaking mess now.

I'm going to use the FSA program at work to pay for some 1-on-1 sessions with a fitness trainer and get him to work up a program for me (I'm 69 now), with emphasis on stretching and mobility, as well as strength training. After getting started, I'm planning to continue the workouts at home. One of my daughter's friends is a 5th dan and runs the dojang I used to train at (my master is about 76 now and has turned most of the instruction over to her and a group of about a dozen black belts). If I can get some mobility back I may actually start the karate up again. Some of my old bastage friends have kept it up over the years and still train. The thought of starting that back again scares me a little.

But I gotta do something. I'm turning into the tin man on wizard of oz.

I've never cared for the gym. Going in the morning before work and having a shower/change there just isn't appealing to me. Then going at night at the end of a long days work, also is not appealing to me.

I ride my peloton every day first thing in the morning. Then I use my bow flex every other day. I max out the weight/resistance I lift to where I can complete five sets of 20 for every muscle group I'm focus focusing on. I have a love-hate relationship with cardio, but it's hard to beat that runners high. It's definitely noticeable with my resting heart rate being between 47 to 52 bpm. Reading Brandon's post reminded me that I need to go check out/purchase some kettle bells. Peloton now has classes specifically for just kettle bells.

Good on you John! We've looked at the Peloton, just haven't pulled the trigger. You can buy used bikes now, which might be an option.

I work from home, so jumping into the garage with the treadmill/KB for sometime during the day, is convenient for me. If I had to drive somewhere to get in a workout, not sure I'd do it to be honest.

Speaking of KBs, they've changed the way I work out and they're also great for cardio, if you do workouts with little to no rest, between the movements. You'll be surprised at just how many areas you can hit, with 1 KB. I have three, 12kg (26.5lb)/16kb (35lb)/20kg (44lb) and they work great, but be prepared to pay a couple hundred bucks for those 3.

I'm still amazed how well AI can create a program, based on KB/running and what I have/my running pace. I finished a 3.5 mile run, with a warmup/run/cooldown and told it how I felt after, the miles I ran and the pace. It then modified my workout for tomorrow and the next run, based on how I feel. Pretty amazing.

I snagged a used mid 2000's one off CL for $100 and it folds up into nothing. The new stuff seems really big as far as their footprint which seems counterintuitive for their target audience. Rods are OK. I may swap them out w new ones.

I need to use it more. My daughter was rocking it quite a bit during lacrosse season. You can do a lot of stuff with them. Very quick set up and take down.

I love Peloton. The messages from the instructors are what I really love about it. Sometimes you just need to hear that message..... That you're not the only one on this earth that's struggling with life, that you can't let others get inside your head, etc. I want to do the kettle bells, because I've pretty much been doing the same workout on the bow flex for a few years now. There's a word for it but I can't think of what it's called at the moment in regards to your muscles getting used to the same thing over and over, and you not receiving a as much benefit from it? Are you even considered buying a used peloton rowing machine.

That's the exact one I have. I bought it new probably 23 years or more ago. It's never giving me any problems, and it's always there waiting for me when it's time to knock the dust off.

Adaptive resistance.

Pretty incredible that you've seen such great results, just being able to get in the gym 2 days a week. It just proves that any weight training is better than no training.

The only thing I'd suggest, would be to split up the muscle groups a little differently. I know it's working for you, but you gotta be gassed on Tuesday/Wednesday, after doing those major areas on Mondays. I'd suggest maybe swapping it and doing:

Monday - Triceps/Back/Legs
Friday - Chest/Biceps/Shoulders

Or something similar. Your muscles will get used to things over time, it's called adaptive resistance and it's always good to rotate/change things up a bit. Try going heavier with less reps every other week or burnouts or negative reps. Just something to introduce a new challenge.

Thanks! Diet had played a big part in it too - I was very strict with my calories with the My Net Diary app and did not cheat. I had it set to lose 1.5lbs a week and it kept me on track and really changed my perception about what I had been eating and how the changes benefited me.

The gym is mainly just keeping up with getting more toned and doing basic strength stuff. Thanks for the ideas on changing up my program - I'll definitely do that and see how things go!
