Another trick I did when I was learning and still packed things too tight was (prior to lighting) remove the stem and used my pipe tool with a reamer (long metal rod) and run into the bowl to make a bit of room. That usually helped it draw much better.

Thank you so much for this suggestion. I had a bowl today and it was wonderful. Great flavor and burned excellent. I mentioned this in another post and could not remember who suggested it. John, give this mix a try, I would say it is up there in my favorites at this point. Andy
