I have a Gerber and lover it. And well they are right here in Portland last time I had a problem with it (the wire cutter chipped) I took it down there and they replaced it free of charge. rp

This deal is no longer available. If anyone's interested... just saw on DealNews.com that they have the Victorinox Swiss Army Multi-tool on sale for $38 after a $10 rebate through Amazon.com.

I got one issued to me about 12 years ago. I had a choice between a Leatherman and a Gerber. I opted for the Gerber, because it was all black, it has served me well.

Having been backpacking for 20 years, I can tell you 2 things based strictly on hiking usability.
1. Ive never once needed a multi-tool. If you want one for the peace of mind, I say go for it. A good knife will do anything you might encounter on the trail. There arent many nuts or bolts that need tightning in nature.
