DOGFISH HEAD BURTON BATON
Burton_3shot.jpg

Style: Imperial IPA
ABV: 10%
Availability: Spring Release
Origin: Milton, Delaware
Price: $ ?? / gifted to me by my west coast brother Chico

Appearance:
Poured an orangish-red...wow light is shining through (not use to this since I usually drink stouts), barely any head formed in my tulip glass. Head was white with very little lacing. The Appearance of tiny bubbles was very noticeable.

Smell:
The smell of citrus, grapefruit and vanilla. With just a hint of alcohol.

Taste:
Still getting use to IPA's but this one was awesome, you get that bitter sweetness of a grapefruit up front and as it changes flavor the oak stands out with an almost burnt marshmallow taste, then it fades to a sweet orange-vanilla after taste. Caught me totally off guard. WOW

Mouth feel:
Kind of dry. No stickiness.

Drink-ability:
This beer is very drinkable, very quenching. Even though this had 10% alcohol I didn't notice it at all in taste but hit me like a brick wall. I could've drank 2,3,5, maybe 7 more..JK LOL.

Overall Impression:
This is one of the best IPA's I've had. Very drinkable...keep you wanting more. Considering my love has been stouts, this IPA was really good and it really hit me hard. You east coasters are very lucky, wish this was readily available in my area :(

Thank you Chico this was an awesome choice!

Nice review Mike, this is a favorite of mine. While not officially the case, I would classify it as an Imperial English IPA as it is quite a bit different then the American style. In fact, it would be a great beer for people like Justin who don't enjoy the smack you in the face, butthole puckering hops that most stateside IPA's posses. I would have to say that even DFH 90 isn't a hop attack as it has a very roasty characteristic that is much different then most others in the style.

Another great English IPA that non hop heads would love is the Meantime IPA.

I LOVE the DFH 90 min. DIPA. I agree that it's not over-the-top in terms of hop bitterness. If you're looking for an easy-to-drink session style English IPA that isn't "butthole puckering", you might try Yards IPA as well. Most of their Ales are English-style and tend to shy away from the big American Imperial versions.

Hmmm, I might have to track some down once I recover from the current binge. I did really enjoy the Meantime IPA.

Thanks Jonas.

That is so wierd cause in the back of my mind it did not taste like any of the IPA's I've had. It was almost like a barleywine (JW Lees) with less sweetness. This was my first DFH and by all means not my last.  I enjoyed it a great deal!

Now I've always seen the Meantime IPA at the local but never considered it since I was more into stouts and porters...Now you've raised my eyebrow :D I am gonna have to try one.

Nice review! I picked this one up also, and have had samples the last 2 years also. According to the label it is an oak aged IPA blended with a young IPA, they say "Two Threads" in reference to the old 3 threads that Porter used to be called way back when.
I agree with everything that Mike said, it is very drinkable. I think past years were a bit fuller in body, which made for richer flavors. This definitely does not drinklike a beer that is 10% alc, it is a very enjoyable brew!
Now I need to go out and find a couple more 4 pks!!
