I recently switched service from Verizon to ATT (not my choice coz company pays the bill) and the service is absolutely horrible. That will be a big problem for Apple. Not sure why they hooked up with ATT - big mistake!

The phone looks amazing, but, yeah, ATT is terrible up here. The coverage is awful and the service agents are even worse.

I really have no need for an iPhone, but I'm all for the technology advancing as fast and furiously as it can. Good things can come from it.

I'm still using one of these

I got one and as of now its still a 600 dollar 911 dialer. There are problems with my account to get it activated. Was on hold for two hours last night, and finally got through to a very angry person who told me there was nothing to do but create a new account. When I had talked to a person a few hours before from att who said that all i had to do was change something on my account and it would work. So go figure. I'm on hold again this morning to see if i can get a more accommodating customer service rep.

What I'm told is that this is an AT&T issue... that the unexpected demand has caused them to fall behind on account activations.

Unexpected demand????

This was the most hyped phone ever.

Well, I can't activate it on my business account, which i knew for a while. But hopefully the lady in charge of the cell accounts at my dads work will be able to figure something out. Because it's mainly a problem with discounting the account. So i hope i can stay on the same account and just lose my discount. I've been reading some mac forums and there are a lot of people going onto 28 hours waiting for activation. I'd be furious if i was in that boat. Moki, anything stand out as really great or bad now that youve had some more time to play with it?

AT&T dropped the ball on their provisioning system (read: activation). I'm told they are still in "crisis mode" -- idjits heh.

Anyway, what stands out as really good is that it's a great phone. The additional features that it offers are easy enough to use that you'll actually use them.

Really, the best thing I can say is that it all "just works" and does so in a very natural way.

The only real negative is the EDGE network's speed. A non-issue for me while at home or at work (since it just uses my WiFi), but on the road... blech. The web browser works incredibly well, which is what makes the speed of the EDGE network so annoying. The speed is fine for email and other Internet functions, though.

There are other minor things that are not a big deal, and I understand will be addressed soon in a software update, but for instance you can't upload a custom ringtone. Stupid. They provide some nice ones, but c'mon.

I'd also like to be able to mount the phone as a hard drive the way you can with an iPod, but I understand why they didn't allow that (so that you can disconnect the phone at any time, even in the middle of synching). Still, having that as a hidden "expert" preference would be nice.

Other than that... it just kinda works.... and works very well.

Hey LilBastage, I still have my Motorola "Brick" phone too! That was the best phone ever! I used mine for years. The new phones are pretty fancy and do a lot more, but the "brick" is my alltime favorite.

During the hurricane season of '04 (I live in Florida), they did some local news spots about emergency services and stuff. There was one piece about how many of the FEMA guys still carry the "brick" because of it's robustness and the fact that analog cellular is better and has greater coverage (still!) than the digital system.

Just for the record, I currently carry a Treo 700P and have SprintPCS for service.

Ha, ha, ha...Apple does make some pretty cool stuff, but I don't think I want their logo tattooed on my ass.

I'm just sayin'.

being a farmer, i don't think i really need it. I can get a wireless signal on my farm (via cingular card, edge network in the boonies), so when necessary i can open up my laptop and do basically everything the iphone can do, except the phone functions. Back when i was an employee working for a hyper growth company, i had crackberrys, treo's, and i can't remember the other 'smart' phone, but i finally got tired of punching that tiny ass screen, so i went w/ a basic cell and people knew if they needed me, call me, otherwise i'll check email when i have the time. I have a PDA now, but i'd rather use a paper note pad. Guess i'm a techno regress

I also got the iPhone. I waited just an hour. I have been a mac fanatic for years. I have only ever owned Apple shite. Hell I even worked at Apple for 5 years.

For those of you that got the iPhone, ENJOY! I am enjoying mine.

Have you tried the iPhone yet? They demo units at the Apple Stores and AT&T stores. Makes sense to me to try something before commenting on it.

;)

We're fanboi's here too! Every evening for the last 2 weeks my son and I have been discussing the days iPhone news over dinner. My wife was about to give him the $600 just to shut him up...

No, I haven't played with one yet. I may at some point, but I'm pretty happy with my Treo. We're slowly migrating to being an Apple family (typing this on my MacBook), but I still use a Tivo (no AppleTV) and although SprintPCS has it's pros/cons, I switched from Cingular several years ago to go to Sprint. Sprint support is bad, but Cingular support was really bad....they didn't know what they were doing and they were rude about it. The last straw for me was during a billing support call with a "Billing Specialist" it became obvious that the math involved in prorations was totally beyond her and she was snotty to boot. I cancelled my service and haven't looked back. Not in a big hurry to return either.

The iPhone is cool and it would be fun to have one....Good luck with yours.

This was the most hyped phone ever.

I remember the Razr being VERY Over hyped and a good bit of people I know (true I am 23 so they were younger people) switched from Verizon, the best provider in our area to Cingular, the worst in our area. I should know, I've had both.

Every time a new gadget, fad, etc. comes out someone (news or personally) says "it's the biggest thing ever", and they are right, until the next thing. I'll just wait for the best (or coolest) phone Verizon has when I upgrade my contract. ;)

Haven't gotten one, but will probably only seriously look into them in a couple of years time.

I carry this now traveling abroad and as back up to VHF on my boats:

Iridium Satphone

For home/car use, I carry this:

And also have this for much more rugged abuse...travelling stateside, down in the Keys, etc.:

I have the greatest phone ever! It, get this, makes phone calls! Extra features include text messaging, speaker phone (my only real requirement in a phone) and a battery life of weeks! (no exaggerating)

I'm a gadget guy as much as the next, but I just want a phone that'll make calls. :)

ive had a few days to play with my iphone and i have to say, you just have to try it. its kinda like when i first got an ipod and people were like "why would i need one of those?". its hard to imagine how great this phone is until youve really had a chance to use it. even the simple things, like rewinding a voice mail back a few seconds because you didnt get the phone # or when someone calls long distance, it will recognize the prefix and tell me what city they are calling from. just stupid little stuff are what makes this phone very cool.

Indeed. That was the shittiest damned excuse I've heard in a long time. Totally incompetent. Here's what a competent provider might have done:

2 weeks prior to launch:
Service Provider: "Hi, Apple? How many iPhones will you have in-stock and ready to sell in the first week and then the first 30 days?"

Apple: "We have 15,000 units in the Apple stores nationwide to support the first week's demand. An additional 50,000 units are in production or distribution warehouses ready to roll over the next 30 days."

Service Provider: "Cool. We'll arrange to bring an additional 500 account reps online in Mumbai for the launch date."

Apple: "Thank you! Now neither of us will look like bungling dunces and this product introduction will happen smoothly, seamlessly and we'll have legions of happy, satisfied customers who will tell all their friends how great the experience was."

I have the greatest phone ever! It, get this, makes phone calls! Extra features include text messaging, speaker phone (my only real requirement in a phone) and a battery life of weeks! (no exaggerating)

I'm with you, bro. My Audiovox CDM-8300 does everything I need it to do and nothing I don't. Fast, tough, and free three years ago with activation.
