I was having a conversation with a few friends last night and one of the topics was about selling gifted cigars. I thought it was worthy of bringing up to the masses.

IMO, when someone gifts you a cigar, the intention is for you to enjoy it by smoking it. Turning around and selling it (without asking the gifter) is just plain wrong. I know that I would never gift a cigar to someone that was going to turn around and sell it..... its just not in the spirit of the gift.

This could be applied to starting a box pass also. If you are going to start a box pass...do it with your own smokes, not cigars that have been gifted to you.

I open the floor for discussion...... :)

So what do you do with all those domestics then Kenny? Knowing you smoke only Havana's and super premies. Just ribbing ya. It is an interesting question though. What to do with a cigar given to you that you know you won't smoke. Weather it is because you don't like it or say too strong.

I will agree that selling gifted sticks is in poor taste. However I think including gifted sticks in a pass or re-gifting them is acceptable especially if you think others might enjoy the sticks more then you would. I'm very curious to see what others think about this subject.

Laughing @ Emo..... points well taken.

My post was more about selling a gifted cigar for the money......not anything to do with dog rockets or unliked cigars. I think we can agree there's a big difference.

If I am handed a cigar I will not smoke, I kindly tell the gifter no thanks. If it is sent to me unknowingly, and I will not smoke it, I do one of two things..... I either say nothing and donate the cigar to someone that will smoke it or if I know the gifter well enough I will tell them outright I don't care for those cigars (so next time they get it right...LOL) and will be gifting it to another unless they would like it back. Either case I would not sell it unless the gifter gave his blessings to do so.

Did that make sense?

For me, selling a gifted stick is definitly taboo. I have let my cousin or friend that enjoy smoking have one while we are here enjoying each others company. As for sending in a gift. Well if I like them I wouldnt do it just so I didnt have to spend money to bomb someone. Ill make them wait :p And I never met a cigar I didnt like. :0 As my taste are changing I 'm not sure what the answer is for sticks that you just dont like?

Very well put. Pretty much exactly how I feel about this subject. Afterall, our little brotherhood of cigar smokers is all about enjoying fine smokes, not about profiting off the generosity of others. Am I right?

I agree whole-heartedly Kenny. And yes, I too re-gift smokes that I don't/won't smoke to those that would like them.

Another good point which I would agree and disagree with.

I didn't mean to refer to trading cigars received from a box pass. I totally believe that cigars received from box passes are your cigars to do with what you want. My example on box passes was very poor. Let me retry to make my point......

If someone starts a pass with 10 cigars in it and I see that the top 6 cigars are ones I recently gifted to him because he said he "always wanted to try one of those" I would be down right upset.

The spirit of this post is about not profiteering or trying to build your inventory off of other peoples generousity. Sad to say but some seem to think nothing of it.

I would agree with the selling of gifted smokes.
If they were gifted to you, you should not turn around and sell them.
(I have either bought and/or traded for the cigars that I am trying to sell here.)

I would say that passing them or trading them is a matter of opinion.
I would say no, but then again, I am about to have a pass where I am putting about 5/6 of my humidor up for passing. This is just a way for me to offer up my humidor for the pickings. There is one 'gift' in there (I think only one) that I just got from a missle launched by Joe Invest, but it will not be traded, I will give that to one of the passes.

I agree.

Telling someone that you have always wanted to try a stick or mentioning that you never had a certain stick so someone would send you one and then selling it is very wrong. That is not only bad manners but also taking advantage of your friends for profit. Anyone doing this should be outed. I don't think you should sell any cigar that you haven't bought yourself.

Bombings and bonus sticks from trades are fair game in a box pass, or to gift to someone else. If you make a trade with someone and they toss in a particular stick you have been looking for.... that is different, see first line of this post. For me it would come down to the personal touches. You make a trade with X, they send you a couple bonus sticks and a note saying they knew you wanted to try, or had never seen, or what ever this stick. The note makes it personal and I would either smoke it myself or keep it. I'm sure I'm not the only one with cigars in my collection that will never be smoked because of who gave them to me.

Personally, once I give someone a cigar, or anything for that matter, it's their's to do with as they please. Sell, trade, gift, whatever. I'll admit I would be hurt if someone turned around and made a profit off of something I gave to them, but it wouldn't last long enough to really bother me. I have never sold a cigar that was gifted to me. I have sold a couple that were aquired in a trade, but the person I traded with knew that I was selling them and if I remember right got a couple of extra smokes as a thank you. I have given away cigars that were given to me, but it is usually to someone I am sitting down and smoking with, i.e. they come over and pull a "I haven't had one of those". As far as box pass, I personally don't think I ever put anything in a pass that was a gift, trades, yes, I'm sure I've put some of those in. I have a desktop stuff with things I will never smoke, some were bonuses, some were trades and I'm sure a few were gifts at some point. I just stick things in there and if someone ois looking for something I'll pilfer through and see if I have any and give 'em out. I used to be given cigars all the time but since I am pretty picky about what i smoke, most of the time I turn down gifts that I know I will not smoke. Most people that are giving you something are doing it out of the kindness of their heart and are giving you something they also like. So, I feel bad taking it and then just throwing it in the bottom of a box and forgetting about it. Now, if Kenny sent me a Papayo, since i know he smokes these regularly, I would have no remorse about snapping it over his head! LMAO!

Laughing @ Matt!

Did I just here "The King of Artistic Mooching" say that? :0 ROFLMAO! ;) :D

...and BTW, I haven't had any of those Siglo VI's yet. (notice the plural form) :sign:

Interesting subject.
I always felt that when I am given a gift, it is mine to do with as I see fit. For example if I receive a shirt as a birthday gift and decide that I don't like it, I would return it to the store and change it for another more to my taste, or get a cash refund if I find nothing there I liked.
Following that thread, why would it be different with a gifted cigar? It is mine to do with as I please, whether to smoke, give away, trade away, or sell.
Presumably the person giving the gift is doing it with good spirit and looking to please the recipient. How relevent is it that the recipient keep the gift?

The relevance to me comes into play when we know why the cigar was gifted. Did the giftee want to try the cigar or was it just an off the hand gift. If the intention was for the giftee to actually smoke it then they should do so and not get rid of it. Otehrwise, I fall in line with what Pepe said.

I fall in line with Mr. R.... I have so many cigars coming in from bombs/gifts/trades here and on HP that sometimes it is hard to remember which cigars were gifts and which were trades. I try and write down what is what, but being a millitary man and father of 3 youngins I don't always get it done. I do try to errr on the side of good judgement though.
The only real grey area I see is in passes. When you get a cigar in a pass "marked for host only". Do you treat it as a gift, a passed cigar, or in cigar purgatory?

I would definitely treat it as a gift.

I usually give my cigars a 3 day nap minimum before I indulge. My problem lies in the fact that the gnerous guys here tend to send 6-8 cigars at a time. I smoke about 8 cigars every 2 weeks, so there lis the problem for me. The one thing that saves me is that when I get underway, I smoke the 3-4 cigars a week, but when I pull into that lush tropical port, I can smoke 4-5 a day.

Some time soon I hope to complete a trade or pass where I get bak the same amount or less cigars than I send out. LOL
