I read that some people who order online are receiving bills from the government forcing them to pay several hundred dollars + in tobacco taxes. People who order from out of state are being presented with these absurd bills. Anyone here have this happent to them?

I'm confused... what happened to "Rod"?

No taxes yet... knock on wood.

Yeah - where's Bob and what have you done with him!!

I've heard it applies ONLY to cigarette taxes at this point. I don't believe they're going after cigars - YET....

Maybe he got tired of everyone calling him everything except his real name.

Nope no taxes for me.

So what happens if you buy from CBid or Cigarauctioneer? Would you have to pay a sliding tax scale or would it be exempt because of the nature of the purchase, an auction?

Agreed, I have also heard that this is only pertaining to cigarettes at this point. I'm sure that us cigar folks will get hammered sooner or later.

Eh, cigars and cigarettes are a diff product.

Sold in diff ways, made in diff ways, diff alltogeather. Like comparing MGD in a bottle to cognac .. yeah they both come in bottles and get you runk, but diff things.

IMO, would not see this happening to cigars yet.

Heard some folks across the river in Oregon got the bill in the mail over some gars. Not sure what firm was involved...I'll see if I can find out. The State of Oregon has declared war on on-line tobacco purchases in general; more than one cigar vendor won't ship to Oregon anymore for just that reason.

They'll spend a thousand bucks to collect a hundred in taxes....stupid.

Regards - B.B.S.

The taxes being collected in this way are from people who were ordering cigarettes through the tax free Indian reservation web sites. I know of people getting bills for hundreds of dollars. So far no cigar sites have been targeted.

This has been happening in Wisconsin. http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/jul05/342254.asp

There are many articles listed, but I think this is the first. The state of Wisconsin really screwed this one up. First they billed some people, then they changed their mind and offered rebates to those who paid the tax, then the Attorney General stated that the Gov. Doyle could not offer the rebates.

Actually, my experience indidcates it's just the reverse. My state tax commission billed me for purchases going back to 2001 from 2 online retailers who were NOT Native American dealers.

I called my current vendor (a reservation site) and he/they indicated that they will not respond to requests for custtomer database info. Wish I'd known that $600+ ago.!! :(

Yeah ... we're not exactly the best on stuff like that in Milwaukee.
Good thing I'm in MN for the year!

I mean, I can see paying the 25% tax in shops. Cigars are a luxury and the 'social bleeding heart weak willed liberal in me' [fig. I'd get it out before others] thinks nothing wrong with collecting it to help out programs. On the other hand, do not like it when politicians then turn around and say cigars are bad for you and we need to ban them.
If they're banned ... doesn't that get rid of the extra $$$ coming in?

That said, the US and other countries need to make up their minds one way or another on what to charge. Of course that does raise constitutional issues, at both federal and state levels. One being, if bought from another state, wouldn't we pay the tax to the state we bought it from .. seeing as how, in loose terms, by buying it from them in that state, we did business there? Or, is it since they sold it to me and shipped it to me in my state, would it count as being bought here? Then of course, wouldn't they have to pay the state tax for doing business in my state?

anyways, that's what you get for studying while surfing online.

Can't the goverment save on leaveing us alone. Give the extra money need to fund there recovery program to the people of Katrina.

I think if, for example, you live in Maryland, you shouldn't have to pay Illinios taxes for cigars bought from an outfit in Ill, because presumably you won't reap the benefits of whatever programs are funded by Illinois sales tax (schools, roads, whatever).

As far as Maryland making you pay taxes on it, I imagine they would like to but it's unenforceable, AFAIK. Along the lines of whay psyktek said.
