Cigar Exchange Protocol

Man, if you give me a rare cigar as a gift. I would smoke that thang!!!!! :p

Can someone send me a hard to find cigar?

Personally I would not trade or re-gift a gifted smoke but I would not care if someone traded or re-gifted a cigar I gifted them.

I also treat Cuban cigars I pull out of a pass differently. Those fall into two different categories, those that were put in a pass by someone REPUTABLE and those that were put in a pass by someone who I do not know (those are usually fake).

I would NEVER trade, re-gift or place a Cuban cigar I pulled out of a pass that I participated in on a site like say oh, uh, CigarWeakly because the "Cuban" cigars there that are sold and traded by most of their members are almost always fake. AND when you ask these guys "Hey, that PSD#4 I took out of the pass that you put was a fake. Where did you get it?" They get awfully stupid, awfully fast: "Gee, duh, I don't remember....."

Now if I was participating in a pass here or on CigarSnobs and I "took" a Cuban cigar that was "put" by someone like JOE.M, ggiese, Lee, SamClemmons, etc., I have the upmost confidence that cigar is legitmate. Now comes the question, is it okay to "put" a cigar you "took" from a pass in another pass? Personally, I never would BUT I would have no problem if someone did this. There are other cigar sites were this is grounds to have your ass whipped into submission as they feel that it is bad form to put cigars in a pass that you took from another pass.

So, there are two schools of thought as to how you treat cigars you pull out of passes so maybe Ginseng should add another couple of lines to his chart.

The bottom line is there are quite a few other cases that are not addressed by the chart and differing schools of thought as to what the "proper" thing to do in those situations is.

CC,
How do you keep everything seperated? I find that I put all my gifted cigars in a seperate Humi for smoking. But everything else goes in my coolador. ISOM on one shelf, Padrons, VSG, and Graycliffs on another and then it's a free for all after that. It's hard to keep everything seperate. And I feel if I buy,or trade then they can be traded. In a pass or just a trade. Is this wrong?

After you've been doing this for many years, you remember the cigars that are gifts, trades, passes, etc.

I know where everything in my humidor came from. I have these archiving pens with a super fine point ((Micron 05) that I use at times. The ink is archival ink, which is acid-free and used in museums, etc. Works great on the cap of a cigar. I used to use them a lot, not so much anymore though. I tend to remember what is gifted first, I don't pass anymore so that eliminates that one. I also know which are from group buys, etc.

Another thing you can do to help yourself is if you save boxes, you can arrange them in your cabinet, cooler, whatever so that you label the box.

I know some think that gifted or not, their your cigars and you can do what you want with them. I was taught that this practice is frowned upon and it's more about principal than anything else.

What do you do with he cigars that are gifted you that you just don't care for? I'm sure that a lot of folks have them. I know I do. So if you don't like them can you re-gift them to someone else or are you just stuck with them? Can you trade them for something you like? I don't want to "hurt" anyones feelings by saying "I just don't care for those cigars you sent me" So what do you do with them?

Great idea!!!

I'm glad to see some discussion on this subject. At some point I will likely redo the chart to add new categories.

Keep in mind that the point of this thread is not to spell out the commandments of cigar exchange as such. And certainly, these are not to be construed as my comments on the subject. Rather, the greater purposes of this thread are to 1) make these customs explicit and accessible and 2) subject them to scrutiny and discussion. These are two vital aspects of any community's growth and development.

Thanks to everyone who has shared their thoughts.

I keep a data base with a field that is called "From" meaning where I got it from. Here are examples of entries in that column:
"Purchased from RicMac25"
"Gift from JOE.M."
"Trade with BigMac"
"Bomb from NorCalCigarLover"

That's funny Bill, I use my head....

Seriously though, I can forget what I was going to do 5 minutes ago but I remember stuff I did when I was 8, in great detail....

For some reason, I have always been able to go through my collection over the years and could remember where each smoke came from. My buddy from Georgia was up a while back and was looking through the desktop. He couldn't believe I remembered that stuff....the mind is a terrible thing

Since cigars dont last to long in my humidor, its easy to keep track of things. And the few cigars that was gifted to me I cant get so those stand out like a sore thumb. :D So I never needed to keep track of my cigars. I should tho and tried. But hell...I was smoking so many it was impossible to keep track of.

Ok, I have a question along these lines. This hasn't happened, just something I've thought about.

Say a member gifts me a cigar. I thank him, smoke it, enjoy it, so much so that I go and purchase more. Then a couple months down the road, I do a pass or trade, and this same member sees me passing or trading the same stick, not knowing I've purchased some more of them on my own, and he gets upset about, and decides to call me out on it (hopefully via PM first). What should be done in that situation? Should he be given a "heads up" before I do the pass/trade?

I'm trying very hard to have a good rep on here, and don't ever want to be seen as a bad trader/passer/mooch/asshat!!!!!

Dad always said, "Be careful of gifts with stings attached and expectations."

That's why I never take anything from Mom! :D

I USED to be good with things like that but not anymore. I know all the birthday's of all my friends from high school, I know my ex-wife's driver's license number BUT I have a very hard time remembering facts and infomation I learned over the past few years. :( Could be early stages of Alzheimers which runs in the family but most people say it happens to them too. :D

Pretty simple, you tell him exactly what you just said here.

No worries Wolfman. Your all good with me :D And who else matters? :whistling:

Here's a unique one:

How about if Person A gifts Person B a really nice cigar, let's say for example a Shark. Then shortly after that, some really hot girl smoking a cigar (Hottie A) happens along, and soon finds herself a seat at our table. Is it OK for Person B to regift that cigar to Hottie A in an effort to score? I believe these are somewhat unusual circumstances, and after all, she was wearing knee-high stockings in a school-girl outfit.

Not that this might have happened recently or anything...

I'd say if you give a woman a cigar and get laid because of it, it doesnt matter where the cigar came from.I wouldnt be mad at you for it. Where the hell are you hanging out anyway?
