Saturday night, the wife and I hosted an adult game party. Not those kinds of adult games. She handled food, I handled drink. The offerings:

New Holland Cabin Fever Brown Ale (a first)
Bell's Winter White Ale (another first)
Surly Bender
Surly Furious
Murphy's Stout
Guinness Stout
Peroni
New Castle
All the shit people have left at my house (Heineken, Sam Adams, etc.)
St. Bernardus ABT 12

Has anyone else tried the Cabin Fever? F.ck, I thought that was pretty rancid. Tasted like someone took one of the Murphy's and dumped a cup of red wine into it. Bleh. The Bell's Winter White, which is a wheat beer, was pretty good; but I should have read the bottle closer. I didn't know it was a 'wheat ale'. Never even heard of that before, actually. Does that make Blue Moon a 'wheat ale' as well? Don't know, but I've been off of wheat beers for a while, so that was a let down. The other folks loved it though, and actually that and the Surly  were gone in the first couple hours.

The other thing I realized at our party, and this is pretty gd depressing, is that so many of the beers I used to enjoy have just fallen by the wayside for me. I drank a Murphy's at some point in the night and didn't enjoy it. It was, sort of 'empty'... One of the guests was going on and on about some new Fireside Nut Brown Ale (Leinies), so I tried it... 'empty'. I used to love Stella, now I refer to it as Europe's Budweiser, and that has nothing to do with the ownership.

Anyway, we concluded by cracking a bottle of ABT 12 for those who were still drinking. The end of the night then included goodbyes and explanations of where St. Bernardus could be purchased. That was a huge hit.

Not sure, there may be some wheat lagers, but the vast majority of wheat beers are ales. And yes, St. Bernardus is the shit.

Ales, bocks, lagers, pilsners, stouts... It's funny how little I know of the differences, but none of my friends or family know either. "Wheat beers are ales." That's a bet I would have lost. I thought they were hefeweizens

Hefeweizens are a style of wheat beer, and a style of ale!

If you're interested in reading up on different styles, there is a decent reference page on BA Mick.

Yeah, I split a case of it with a friend, and am close with the local rep in this area (read his blog here). I actually like it a lot. It's one of the better "brown ales" (which is pretty generic, if you ask me) I've had this year. Maybe you got a bad batch that was oxidized or something?

Or, maybe we just have really different tastes...

This was a combination of a trade/a bomb/local purchases/and a purchase that showed up today. Made for a great day overall!

Very nice, Justin! Man I miss Alpha King. If I could get it here it would be my everyday beer. What a freaking great beer.
