Let me start this off by saying that "If the shoe doesn't fit, don't wear it" OK now for the rant...

Many of you have stated it, and shown it in the recent attendance lately; Hell even Rod had to post regarding it (of which he hardly does). What I am talking about is the senseless posting that is occurring, and IMO it is getting way out of hand. I will not name people or threads but I am sure you can figure that part out.

Now before you begin to start bashing me, contemplate this. This is a CIGAR forum; BOTL/SOTL's come here to find like minded people to engage in conversation, learn, trade / sell / buy cigars, and make friends. Although there are areas such as the Lobby to post anything besides cigars, but honestly; just because you CAN post anything, does that mean you should?

Cigarpass is not a moderated site, meaning all the members control the environment. I think that we must moderate ourselves BEFORE Rod is forced to moderate CP for us.

This forum has been a GREAT source of information for me and my hobby, and along the way I have made some GREAT friends (of which I am very thankful for). But I have signed on a time or two and have found nothing worthy of reading.

I enjoy reading "content worthy" posts as I am always learning in this ever-changing hobby. But I feel that my some of my time is wasted when I read post after post of useless content.

Now many of you will say "Tim... You have posted BS before". Yes I have, I admit it... BUT, I think this is a good time for me (as well as others) to start "Thinking before posting"; simply ask yourself... 'Will this post contribute to the community that we call CigarPass?' If so... Post away...

:p :sign:       :) :( :D ??? :0 :whistling:

I'll second that. I have noticed the lobby especially, but also a lot of questions in the other forums that have been asked time after time.

I agree, there are a lot of senseless posting at times on this site, and I have been guilty of it too.

But I think that this topic is a very fine double edge sword. I understand the burden that it puts on Rob to have to maintain a a$$ load of crap post but, if we make it seem that only cigar content be posted then this place will lose the human quality that helps set it apart from just being another technical forum about a hobby or lifestyle.

I think we still need off topic post and threads, they help flesh out the membership, keeps them from just being a name on a page.
Furthermore, as a community, we do need to be a little bit more responsible about what we post as well.

Tim

I have noticed it too, but the second post in this thread is a fine example of wasting Rod's bandwith.......

Isn´t it like in real life? Some people have interesting and entertaining things to say and listening to others
you want to stick some BS-protectors into your ears.
The good thing with forums is that they teach you the lost art of selective reading. ;)

Thank god I can't read this post due to the fact that I have BS protectors covering my eyes.

Tim,

I'm glad you feel sufficiently comfortable to share your frustrations with us. Now that you've done so, put your pants back on fer chrissakes!

But seriously, I hear what you're saying. About the only comfort I can offer is the observation that the various characteristics of any dynamic community fluctuate from time to time. Perhaps not always in terms of predictable cycles, but variations nonetheless. I'm confident that the fine members of this forum have things well in hand and that the recent abundance of fluff threads probably reflects nothing more insidious than the blowing off of "end of the summer" steam.

I agree with Tim (MX) in that being a social forum in addition to being an informational one, threads and topics which reflect whimsy and relationship building are not only allowable but desirable. The line is a fine one, of course, but in my estimation, we are really not anywhere near critical on this issue.

Wilkey

Its the fucking heat, all the crazies are stuck inside where it is cool, and have nothing better to do. Simple enuff explanation.

I hear what your saying Wilkey, thanks for your input and wisdom. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments, I know it is a tangled web that we all weave and that a community is built of ALL parts not just the desirable ones.

We're all big boys here, but sometimes the search button needs to be used a bit more. I tend to keep my big mouth shut most of the time. I'm a retailer, but I'm also a member here.

I personally don't feel this is a big issue but maybe I am missing your point of view. This thread seems like it would/could detour some of the friendly banter that makes this forum so desirable to me. I understand that with the influx of new members you are bound to get some that are going to push the dumbass limits with post after worthless post of nothing more then senseless dribble, but on the other hand we need a fair amount of fun and games whether it be an inside joke, a jab at a fellow member, or just mindless fun from time to time. IMO the last thing we want to become is some elitest club where people have to second guess whether or not their contributions are informative enough to meet our presumed lofty expectations. Besides, a content worthy post is a subjective thing, and over time most of the idiots weed themselves out or get shown the door. Just my .02.

Well said, Denverdog! And I was thinking the guys in German forums take things too seriously....

While I come here to learn.............A big part of why I come here is to socialize, have fun, and make friends. Sure, I have made some post that do not contribute to the CpP community in any way. And yes, I have made some that I wish I could take back, even though they seemed like it would be okay at the time (Just did it last Saturday with Jonesy in Wades done thread  ).
Some of it comes from boredom, due to the fact that it seems like everytime I log on this summer, I find the "same old stuff" on the boards.
Whatever has been going on, I think it will change. Everyone I talk to that has been around here for a few years says that this place goes through these spells from time to time. Wilkey just pointed this out in his post.

While getting carried away like I did in Wades thread acting silly may not have been cool. I don't think that we should get so uptight, that we act like there is no room for fun, or post other than cigar content.

Exactly what I am referring to, If anyone has felt that I am trying to change the board or moderate it then I have obviously mistyped what I meant to say, that is not my intent.

I guess I might have to take a different approach to asshattery, besides history tells us that they don't last long anyway.

We all started out fresh here. We should all help (even if it's just a little bit) the new members navigate the waters.

This is a good thread so far, thanks tkoepp.

I tend to agree with Timmy...

Although it is a cigar forum, we do have the luxery of the Lobby, for "General discussion about anything other than cigars..." BUT... I think even this has gotten out of control. I would much rather see "look at me" posts like fishing trip results (GUILTY!), vacation pictures, birth announcements, bomb reports and the like... stuff that is directly specific to a member here. Not things like notices of someone not on the board passing away, or God help me the hot chicks (the ones not smoking cigars of course- even tho they are HOT too look at!) or other posts that have nothing do do with us as a cigar forum or its users specifically.

But that's just me. I find that I look into the lobby less and less daily (I even made it so it does not show up unless I go looking for it) and I post there even less these days. Which is a good thing, as I'm spending more time waiting for Puffstuff posts in the deals section!

But it is a social way to interact, and I know that... I just wish it was staying more on target for us as members. And don't even get me started on the lack of searching and the asshats of late...

What he said I was just busy smoking to write a bunch. I couldn't have said it better.
