Unhappy Thread

I don't know how you guys do it. Those and hurricanes!

Hurricanes I can deal with -- you know those are coming. Tornado weather, like when I lived in Jacksonville, AR, and earthquakes, like on Guam and in both cities where I lived in Hawaii (Honolulu and Pearl City)... nope.

All three beat being woken up by a Ballistic Missile Warning, though.

Yeah, I bet. Feel like you're planting hints... 😉

Wife wants bathroom remodeled...can’t find anyone to come out and quote. I have one place that throws a budget of “$15k” at me over just some photos. Finally get a guy to look, we talk a little bit and before he leaves he tells me that no one could do that job for less than $20-24k. And I have to buy the big stuff separately on my own. I tell him send me the quote.

Easter night about 10pm he texts me that they are passing on my bathroom because it’s “not the right fit”. Wtf.

Contact a couple more companies yesterday, one responds via text. After some back and forth about how much I want to “invest”, they say it’s going to be $18-20k. Due to cost of materials and labor going up in the industry...

This room is already a bathroom. Nothing in it needs to be “saved”. It is a fucking 7x8 room....10 percent the purchase cost of the house to remodel a 7x8 bathroom? Maybe I’m way off base. Never have looked into having something remodeled before.

Spent the day yesterday repainting the room. Wife is happy enough to kick the can a little further down the road, but we do need to redo this one room. So either I learn how to demo a bathroom and tile stuff or spend what I feel is way to much money.

I could get behind a higher quote if there is some custom cabinetry being built, and if the place is professional and stands behind their work. But to verbalize a high quote, tell me I would be buying stuff like sinks in a vanity, toilet and an exhaust fan...only to be told it’s not the right fit? I don’t get it. 24k to replace a tile floor and install a stand up shower, sink vanity and a toilet? And some paint?

Agreed. With a hurricane you know it's coming and you have a pretty good idea the strength when it makes landfall, so you can either ride it out or gtfo.

I think your spot on... Your quotes seem high to me... I would think from start to finish a small bathroom would cost around 8-10k, especially if your supply materials, and if you were going really high end up to 15k... If I were you, which I am not, so I don't know you skill level, I would demo myself and at least get bathroom to tile ready if you can. Then I would purchase all the new material (be sure to buy enough tile for waste), and fixtures and then hire tradesmen to come in and finish the job, if your not confident in doing yourself....

For what its worth, my boss just built a prefab lake house. They roughed in plumbing in the basement, and now he is having people quote finishing it. The lowest of 3 bids was 30k. We are talking stool, sink, and tiny shower in plastic. No tile or anything!!!! He also is building a garage now, 20x30, no electrical or plumbing, 55k. That DOES NOT INCLUDE cement which will be another 18-20k. Prices are STUPID

Been through those, sucks when you are in a deep sleep and forget where you are and where your gear is!

Honestly, if it's taking out a vanity, toilet, lights, flooring, there isn't a better way to learn that DIY stuff. What you're running into, are contractors quoting way high, because they don't want to do the job. Are you doing anything with the shower/tub? How many cabinets are we talking? 1 or 2 above the toilet? Will it be new tile?

You'll be investing in your house, but also your own abilities, if you do it yourself. It may take you longer than a contractor, but you'll save a shit load of $$$$. If I lived close, I'd gladly help out and charge a cigar/beer or two!

Agreed, I did out last bathroom remodel myself and learned a TON!!! Rented what I didn't have and hired a plumber for anything that could leak.

Thanks for the ideas guys. My only worry about doing it ourselves (myself) is if it will be up to code. I know nothing about that or even if I need to be concerned about it. At very least we may just tear it down to studs and see where we fall at that point. I have one guy that is supposed to come out in the next 2 weeks, and we will see what he says. I’m just tired of dealing with it at this point.

Tile is my real issue. But maybe I can sub that part out or just figure it out. I mean anything I do is an upgrade haha!

You can do tile. Watch some YouTube videos. You’ll have some confidence after that.

What @cabaiguan juan is exactly right. I went to Home Depot on a Saturday AM and they were hosting a tile event. Then I youtube'd it and just dove him. I did the floor first. Which was the wrong way to do it because then I had to walk over it. BUT I learned on the floor, so when I did it on the wall I was already comfortable. It's WAY easier than you think..

Last night our 26 month old Trane heat pump stopped cooling the upstairs of the house so we had to sleep in 80+ degree weather (even with the windows open). This unit is on its 3rd coil and we have have had several conversations with the GM of the company who installed it. So since I couldn’t go to sleep last night, I just kept running through the conversation (ass chewing) that we were going to have with the GM in the morning. So my wife went over there and managed to catch the GM and let him have it in the way only she can do. Fierce, factual and forceful. With enough tact that it produces productive results (we call it pulling a “Liz”). A few hours later the Tech discovered that it wasn’t the coil (this time). It was improper installation from the last coil fix, 4 months ago. So it’s fixed. We aren’t out any money but my confidence in Trane and Albemarle Heating and Air is as low as it could be.

This unhappy thread stuff reminded me of many, many years ago when I was just a young pup, still residing in Lousisiana, not long after I had nearly cut off a finger in a table saw accident. Well, me, & my girlfriend at that time went out to the Karnack River to go boat riding while our buddy 'Bad Bob' was doing his famous slalom water skiing crap. We were smoking, drinking, toking, and whatever else we could come up with & just generally having fun, like the early 20 somethings we were at that time. We had a blast on the ole Karnac, and we finally came back to the boat launch. There were these three guys just hangin' out at the boat launch, and they started with the damn cat calls at my girlfriend. Well, needless to say I didn't care for that so, me & the three idiots got into a verbal pissing match. Well Hell, I was so intoxicated that I had completely forgot about my hand being a piece of mince meat full of stitches & a couple of stainless steel pins,, just three weeks past a five hour surgery, and all of a sudden I realized my big ass mouth had overloaded my intoxicated pea brain. 🤣 I had to figure out something really QUICK to end the situation so, I jumped out of the boat, went straight away to Bad Bob's Chevy, retrieved Bad Bob's 357 Dan Wesson from underneath the driver's seat, and just waved it around a few times while it was still secured in the shoulder holster. :)
Man O man; you have never seen three jack ass dudes move so quick in your life. 😂
Still wishing I had that on video; could have sold that for a million dollar$. 🤣
That was some unhappy shit that turned out pretty happy!
