I don't think that's quite right. Some states require a "no purchase necessary" option for sweepstakes so it's not considered an illegal lottery. Since the rules for this contest weren't clearly stated somewhere and hence didn't include "void where prohibited", the contest could be in violation of state and federal laws.
Sucks to be canceled and for those in it, but the guy calling it out was right.
